Abstract
We aim to make tabular statistics from federal agencies more understandable and usable by broad strata of citizens. We have divided the work into three general threads.

First we are investigating how people use statistical tables by conducting interviews and observations of different user populations.

Second, we are working with BLS and Census as they build table browser prototypes, focusing on adding functionality rooted in user needs and we will conducting user studies for those systems.

Third, we are developing designs and prototypes for the next generation of interfaces to statistical tables. The first round of design ideas has been presented at a project workshop with government partners and is under revision and extension.
