DG Research Helps Predict Urban Growth
Computer simulation may also help with disaster and re-building scenarios

Borning says you can think of UrbanSim as "SimCity: Professional Edition." In several ways, it is like the popular computer game, although he confesses, without Godzilla. But what it lacks in city-squashing monsters, it makes up for in a sophisticated ability to model potential growth scenarios decades into the future, with real cost numbers. Unlike the game, where changing one key variable, like raising taxes, can cause the Sim-citizens to revolt, UrbanSim looks at the complicated interplay of realistic decisions based on data from local and regional government agencies including transportation networks, census data, parcel ownership data, employment data, economic data, and environmental data, including buildable versus non-buildable land. NSF Initiates Comprehensive Strategic Planning Process
NSF's Cyberinfrastructure Council has initiated a comprehensive strategic planning process to guide the agency's investments in cyberinfrastructure - the IT-based infrastructure increasingly essential to progress in science and engineering. The agency’s plans are being developed in a document entitled NSF’s Cyberinfrastructure Vision for 21st Century Discovery.
