CISE executive officer Dr. George O. Strawn willl take over the design, development and maintenance of the National Science Foundation's IT resources, NSF Director Rita R. Colwell has announced.

As the NSF's new chief information officer, Strawn replaces acting CIO Andrea Norris, who will continue to serve as deputy CIO, Colwell said recently.

Responsibilities of the Chief Information Officer include:

• Ensuring that information technology is acquired and information resources are managed properly
• Developing, maintaining, and facilitating the implementation of a sound and integrated information technology architecture
• Promoting the effective and efficient design and operation of all major information resources management processes
• Monitoring and evaluating the performance of information technology programs throughout the agency
• Developing, maintaining and evaluating an agency wide information security program in accordance with the Government Information Security Reform Act and describing the program in detail in the NSF-wide security plan
• Ensuring that NSF security programs integrate fully into the agency's enterprise architecture and capital planning and investment control processes
• Monitoring agency compliance with the policies, procedures, and guidance in OMB Circular A-130.

Dr. Strawn has served as Executive Officer in CISE since January 1999, was the Acting Assistant Director of CISE from July 2001 until May 2002, and served as Director of the Division of Advanced Networking Infrastructure and Research from 1995 to 1998.

He came to the Foundation from the University of Iowa, where his appointments included: Director, Computation Center; Chair, Computer Sciences Department; and Assistant Dean, College of Sciences and Humanities.

During his tenure at NSF, Dr. Strawn has served as co-chair of both the Federal Networking Council and the interagency Large Scale Networking Working Group, co-chair of the Coordinating Committee on Intercontinental Research Networks and U.S. Representative on the G-7 task force for the Global Interconnection of Broadband Networks. He received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Iowa State University in 1969.
